PolyJet Blow Molds Speed New Product Introduction and Preserve an Important Customer Relationship

Plasel Precision Plastics, a Galilee-based maker of blow-molded plastic packaging, faced a tight deadline to validate a redesigned fastening feature that risked misalignment on a customer's automated conveyor. Traditional options—CNC machining or aluminum molds—would have taken up to 20 days and about $5,000, so Plasel turned to Stratasys and its PolyJet 3D-printed mold technology to meet the urgent need.

Using Stratasys PolyJet molds, Plasel produced 100 blow-molded prototype packages in two days for $280, versus the ~20 days and $5,000 cost of conventional methods—saving 18 days (90%) and $4,720 (94%). The prototypes validated fit, function and conveyor compatibility, secured the customer’s approval, accelerated the product’s market introduction, and helped preserve a key customer relationship.
