Optimize 3D Printing Parameters & Settings Like Never Before with OpenAM™ Software by Stratasys

Rocket Composites, a manufacturer of high-quality carbon fiber parts for aerospace, automotive, consumer and medical clients, needed a 3D‑printed composite layup tool and a trim fixture for a custom order. They planned to use their Stratasys Fortus 450mc printer with ULTEM 1010 for the layup tool and ABS‑CF10 for the trim fixture, but faced FDM® porosity that would ruin the required surface finish — and ABS‑CF10 is not normally available on the Fortus 450mc without modification.

Stratasys’ OpenAM™ software was installed on the Fortus 450mc so engineers could add ABS‑CF10 and create custom print profiles (increasing flow, extrusion temperature and raster penetration while slowing raster fill velocity). The tuned parameters eliminated porosity, produced the required surface finish, enabled the optimal material choice, and delivered a measurable impact: Rocket Composites saved $5,700 and cut delivery time by one week versus a machined‑metal alternative.
