Nicklaus Children’s Hospital uses Stratasys to plan life-saving surgery for 8-year-old Roy

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital faced the challenge of planning an extremely complex and life-saving surgery for an 8-year-old boy with a difficult-to-treat osteogenic sarcoma located in a delicate area of the skull. The hospital's Cardiovascular Surgery Advanced Projects Laboratory needed to visualize the anatomy and plan a surgical approach that would remove the tumor while minimizing disfigurement.

The solution implemented by Stratasys involved creating a patient-specific, 3D printed anatomical model of the boy's skull and tumor from segmented imaging data using a Stratasys J5 MediJet printer. This model, along with augmented reality tools, allowed the multidisciplinary surgical team to precisely plan the procedure. As a result, Stratasys helped the surgeons successfully remove the tumor through the child's mouth, avoiding a disfiguring scar and improving surgical outcomes and patient communication.
