Microsoft accelerates prototyping with Stratasys J850 and 1600dpi color printing

Microsoft's Advanced Prototyping Center faced the challenge of accelerating its "Fail Fast" product development process to keep pace with consumer demand and industry competition. They needed to create high-fidelity prototypes with greater accuracy and color matching to ensure confident design decisions, all while minimizing the time-consuming secondary operations like painting. To meet this challenge, they utilized 3D printing technology from vendor Stratasys.

The solution implemented by Stratasys involved their J850 Prime 3D printer and PolyJet technology, which utilized new VeroUltra and VeroVivid resins. This provided Microsoft with true Pantone Validated colors and a higher 1600dpi resolution, allowing them to produce highly accurate, multi-colored models overnight without any secondary post-processing. According to Microsoft staff, Stratasys fundamentally raised the bar for prototyping, accelerating their product development by enabling multiple rapid iterations that clearly represent design intent and lead to better-informed decisions.
