IRIS Ohyama Uses Multiple 3D Printing Platforms to Speed Up Product Development

IRIS Ohyama, a major consumer-products manufacturer with roughly $1.1 billion in annual sales and more than 1,000 new items launched each year, needed to accelerate development of complex home appliances and tightly fitting assemblies to keep up with rapid product-introduction cycles. To speed design iteration and on-site error correction, IRIS Ohyama adopted Stratasys 3D printing technology, deploying Stratasys Dimension (FDM) and Objet (PolyJet, including the Objet30 Pro) printers.

Stratasys provided a combination of durable FDM ABS prototypes and high-precision PolyJet models, allowing IRIS Ohyama to produce multiple prototypes in a day, identify tiny design flaws by touch and fit, and rapidly iterate assemblies. The Stratasys solution cut prototype lead times from days to hours, improved assembly accuracy and product fit, and supported strong business growth — IRIS Ohyama’s home appliance revenue doubled (200% growth) from 2012 to 2013.
