FDM Implant Puts the Spring Back in Oreo's Step

Orthopaedic Innovation Centre (OIC) was asked to help a six-year-old mixed-breed dog named Oreo after a dislocated patella and a failed surgery left him lame. OIC partnered with Stratasys technology, using FDM on a Stratasys 3D printer and biocompatible PC-ISO material, to explore a custom, low-volume implant solution tailored to Oreo’s anatomy.

Using CAD derived from a donated patella and Oreo’s X-rays, OIC produced and tested an FDM implant on a Stratasys printer in about four days, sterilized it, and implanted it surgically. Oreo regained full range of motion and weight-bearing within eight weeks and remains active more than three years later, demonstrating the clinical viability and rapid turnaround enabled by Stratasys FDM printing.
