A Stratasys Case Study
ScanMed, a division of Resonance Innovations LLC in Omaha that designs and manufactures MRI coil covers, faced long lead times, high costs and design limitations from outsourcing mold masters to CNC shops (about $1,000 and up to seven days per part). To overcome these constraints, ScanMed adopted Stratasys FDM 3D printing technology to produce durable, heat-resistant mold masters in-house.
By using a Stratasys FDM printer with materials like polycarbonate and ULTEM 9085, ScanMed now prints smaller mold masters in 1–2 days for roughly $400 each—delivering a 71% reduction in production time and a 60% cost savings versus CNC. Stratasys’ solution also gave ScanMed greater design freedom (thin walls, integrated side holes), eliminated secondary operations, and produced MRI‑transparent parts suitable as both functional prototypes and mold masters.
