A Stratasys Case Study
The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student Hemani Kumar faced the challenge of reimagining the traditional sari as a modern garment by blending ancient Indian cultural heritage with futuristic technology. With the support of FIT, she sought to create a design that contrasted old, beautiful designs with modern 3D printing, a task that required a novel approach to textile embellishment. She collaborated with Stratasys to achieve this vision.
Stratasys implemented its direct-to-textile 3DFashion technology, utilizing the J850 TechStyle 3D printer to produce Hemani's astonishing 3D embellishments with perfect adhesion to the fabric. The result was a cohesive and show-stopping garment that was a huge hit at FIT’s Future of Fashion 2023 show, with Professor Amy Sperber calling it "museum grade work" and Vogue praising the design. The project demonstrated the technology's potential as a transformative missing link for the engineering aspect of fashion design.
