Decoding Fashion; Stratasys J850™ TechStyle™ 3D Printer Helps Hong Kong Polytechnic University Enable Personalized Apparel Design

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) University Research Facility in 3D Printing (U3DP) faced the challenge of integrating 3D-printed components with soft textiles—overcoming poor surface adhesion across materials and producing prints that could be directly washed—while advancing personalized apparel design. To tackle this, PolyU partnered with Stratasys and introduced the Stratasys J850™ TechStyle™ 3D Printer (Stratasys’ first 3DFashion™ printer in Asia) into its "Exploration of Fashion Design, Based on Textile 3D Printing" project.

Stratasys delivered an end-to-end solution using the J850 TechStyle with PolyJet™ technology and GrabCAD Print™ software, enabling high-fidelity, lifelike color printing directly onto denim, cotton, polyester, mesh and canvas. The result: U3DP staff quickly adopted the system, designers can now produce washable, three-dimensional, tailored garments and complex patterns across varied fabric thicknesses, while Stratasys’ 3DFashion solutions helped reduce prototype waste and shorten time to market.
