Daihatsu creates 15 customizable effect skin designs with Stratasys

Daihatsu Motor Company, a Japanese automaker, sought to provide its customers with greater personalization and design freedom for their vehicles, moving beyond the standard options provided by the manufacturer. To achieve this, Daihatsu collaborated with vendor Stratasys and its 3D printing technology to develop a new type of customizable part.

Stratasys partnered with Daihatsu and external designers to create "Effect Skins," intricate and durable 3D-printed patterns made from ASA thermoplastic for the exterior of the Daihatsu Copen. The solution enabled on-demand production of these customizable parts, allowing for rapid design iteration and bringing the customer directly into the design process. This approach provided a new method for customer self-expression and offered supply chain benefits through efficient, cost-effective manufacturing.
