Custom Injection Molder Embraces 3D Printing

Diversified Plastics, Inc., a Minneapolis-based custom injection molder serving medical and other industries, faced long lead times and high costs when producing prototype molds in aluminum or P20 steel. To accelerate prototyping and reduce expense, Diversified Plastics added an Objet260 Connex 3D Printer from Stratasys to its equipment lineup.

Using Stratasys 3D printing to produce mold components, Diversified Plastics cut prototype lead time from about five weeks to five days and reduced mold cost from roughly $13,000 to $1,500 — approximately an 80% time savings and 88% cost savings. The Stratasys solution enabled the company to injection mold test parts in final materials (helping customers like Coloplast evaluate look, feel and function) and bring products to market much faster and more economically.
