Cross-Curricula Work Establishes a New Standard of Patient Care Using 3D Printing

New York University tapped its LaGuardia Studio to address a clinical challenge: surgeons needed better, patient-specific tools for planning complex kidney and prostate procedures. Biomedical imaging researcher Nicole Wake partnered with clinicians to move beyond 2D scans, using Stratasys technology — specifically the Stratasys J750 — to produce full‑color, multi‑material, patient‑specific anatomical models.

In collaboration with Stratasys, the LaGuardia Studio implemented 3D printing workflows to deliver color‑coded kidney and prostate models for pre‑surgical planning, intra‑operative guidance and patient education. Stratasys’ J750 is being used in a two‑year clinical trial (in partnership with Stratasys) to print models for 100 randomized patients to measure impact versus traditional 2D imaging; early reports indicate the models help surgeons plan more efficiently, save operating room time, improve patient understanding and enhance medical training.
