Creighton University School of Medicine creates lifelike breast biopsy models with Stratasys

Creighton University School of Medicine's radiology department sought to improve medical training by moving away from standard silicone breast biopsy models, which provided an unnatural feel and recoil. Their challenge was to create patient-specific models that accurately mimicked human tissue for ultrasound-guided biopsy training. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor Stratasys and utilized their Digital Anatomy Printer (DAP) and GrabCAD Print software.

Stratasys provided the solution by enabling the creation of high-fidelity 3D printed models using specific anatomical presets to replicate breast and lesion tissue. The resulting models were found to perform significantly better than prefabricated silicone alternatives, with a mammographer reporting a much more realistic feel, better ultrasound fidelity, and a higher volume of trough capture during biopsy. This advancement from Stratasys allows for superior hands-on training, better preparing residents for actual patient procedures.
