Case Study: Compositex achieves halved production time and 20% cost savings with Stratasys FDM additive manufacturing

A Stratasys Case Study

Compositex transforms its composite production with FDM additive manufacturing

Compositex, a Vicenza-based specialist in structural composite components for aerospace and motorsport, faced pressure to meet demanding customer requirements faster and more cost-effectively. To strengthen its in-house capability, Compositex adopted Stratasys additive manufacturing—purchasing a Fortus 450mc industrial FDM 3D printer (via local partner Technimold)—to complement its prepreg production and reduce reliance on outsourcing.

Using Stratasys FDM technology and high-performance materials (ST-130, ULTEM 9085, FDM Nylon 12CF), Compositex 3D-prints tooling (water‑soluble mandrels, lay-ups, inserts) and complex final parts, halving production time and cutting costs by about 20% while meeting finish and performance expectations. The Fortus 450mc runs 24/7 with GrabCAD Print workflow support, enabling new applications (drone ducts, historic supercar air ducts, custom structural parts) and expanding Compositex’s service offering.
