A Stratasys Case Study
Boom Supersonic, a company redefining commercial air travel with its sustainable Overture airliner, faced a challenge in manufacturing its XB-1 demonstrator aircraft. The process of drilling numerous holes for assembly was extremely time-consuming and required costly custom metal drill guides, which also had long lead times.
Stratasys provided a solution by enabling Boom to 3D print multi-hole drill guides using their Fortus 450mc and F900 printers with Nylon 12CF and ULTEM 9085 materials. This resulted in a significant positive impact; for a single typical guide, Boom saved approximately $3,700 and reduced lead time from weeks to days. With over 700 guides printed, the material cost savings were substantial and the production schedule was greatly accelerated.
