A Stratasys Case Study
Biodonostia Health Research Institute, a medical research institute in Spain, faced challenges in performing precise and complex surgeries for thoracic wall tumors. Their in-house 3D printed models lacked the necessary detail and accuracy for surgical planning. Through a partnership that provided access to Stratasys technology, specifically a Fortus 450mc 3D printer using FDM technology, they sought to create highly-accurate, patient-specific anatomical models.
The solution from Stratasys enabled the creation of strong, anatomically-accurate 3D models from CT scans. This allowed surgeons to pre-plan the procedure, pre-bend titanium plates, and measure screws in advance. As a result, Stratasys helped reduce operating time by two hours for a specific case, significantly cutting patient anesthesia time and freeing up valuable operating room resources for the hospital. The models also improved doctor-patient communication and are now being applied to other surgical disciplines.
