3D Printing Improves Liver Transplant Pre-Surgical Planning for Dokuz Eylül University

Dokuz Eylul University Hospital in Turkey, a leader in translational medicine, faced growing challenges in liver transplantation — limited cadaver grafts and the need to protect living donors by accurately evaluating liver anatomy and volume. Preoperative planning with 2D CT data proved insufficient, so the hospital turned to Stratasys and its J750 full‑color, multi‑material 3D printer to produce clinically accurate, patient‑specific liver models.

Using the Stratasys J750, the team produced transparent, high‑resolution (14‑micron layer) liver replicas that clearly show vascular structures (hepatic artery, portal vein, hepatic vein), enabling more precise surgical planning, better trainee instruction, and improved informed consent with donors. Stratasys’s solution helped the hospital anticipate complications, increase lab and OR efficiency, reduce costs, and is expected to boost donor willingness and overall clinical outcomes.
