A Stratasys Case Study
Motus Motorcycles, founded by Brian Case and Lee Conn to build America’s first sport-touring bike, faced the challenge of creating a new V4 engine and redesigning 22 engine castings plus chassis, exhaust and electrical systems—work that traditional tooling would have delayed by about two years. To accelerate development, Motus partnered with Stratasys and used 3D printing, including a uPrint for small brackets and bearings and a Fortus 3D Production System (Fortus 400mc) to produce full-size engine casting models.
Stratasys printed each casting as separate, bolt‑together pieces so Motus could assemble a working engine mockup, design and tack-weld the exhaust and other systems, then swap in the metal prototype with perfect fit. Using Stratasys 3D printing cut the prototype‑to‑production timeline from two years to one—a 50% time savings—enabled earlier revenue generation, supported production of the Motus MST and MST‑R, and contributed to the MST‑R setting two Bonneville land speed records.
