3D Printing Architectural Models Halves the Time and Cost of Stick Construction

KMCA, a leading builder of architectural models, needed scaled-down presentation models for the CityCenterDC development so the developer’s sales team could show prospects the buildings before completion. Traditional stick construction would have taken about eight weeks and cost roughly $20,000, so KMCA turned to Stratasys and its Fortus 250mc 3D Printer to produce the majority of the model more quickly and affordably.

Using the Stratasys Fortus 250mc, KMCA printed the core of each model as a single ABS part and separately printed finer elements like colonnades and atriums, cutting production time to four weeks and cost to $8,000—saving one month and $12,000 (60%) versus stick construction. The Stratasys solution delivered high detail and accuracy, letting the developer get salespeople on the road with scale models one month earlier.
