Advancing Eyelid Surgery Training with 3D Printed Anatomical Models

Addion GmbH, a pioneer in 3D‑printed medical devices, partnered with the University of Innsbruck to address a critical training gap: the lack of standardized, realistic eyelid surgery models that reproduce tissue behavior and rare pathologies. To solve this, Addion collaborated with Stratasys, using the Stratasys J850™ Digital Anatomy™ Printer and Digital Anatomy materials to create high‑fidelity eyelid models that mimic skin pliability, muscle tension, and fat pad behavior.

Using Stratasys technology, Addion produced lifelike models for the 2025 Lid Summit Tirol three‑day course (28 surgeons, 15 stations, four operations per day), enabling repeated hands‑on practice of blepharoplasty, ptosis correction and tumor resection. The Stratasys‑based solution improved learner confidence and skill, provided consistent, portable and scalable training materials, and allowed simulation of complex/rare pathologies—making training more reproducible and effective than relying on body donors alone.
