How Project HOME Achieved a 10x Increase in Donations with A/B Testing and Segmentation

Project HOME, a Philadelphia nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, was struggling to convert outreach into new donors and needed a smarter, scalable fundraising approach. To sharpen its direct mail strategy and understand what drives donor action, Project HOME partnered with Strata Company, leveraging performance-driven direct mail, audience segmentation, and A/B testing of messaging (storytelling vs. urgency).

Strata Company implemented customized A/B tests (two direct mail packages sent to ~5,094 recipients each), refined acquisition lists, segmented audiences, optimized envelope and messaging design, and provided data-driven reporting. The campaign produced a 923% increase in total donations (from $1,255 to $12,846), a 214% increase in number of donations (7 to 22), and a 226% increase in average gift (from $179 to $584), delivering a repeatable framework for ongoing donor growth.
