UGL Unicco, a Newton, MA facilities-maintenance firm with more than 18,000 employees, needed a simple, easy-to-manage data protection and disaster-recovery solution that would work with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and their newly virtualized environment. They wanted centralized, automated backups without the daily operational complexity of traditional TSM deployments.

UGL Unicco deployed the STORServer Enterprise Backup Appliance with the Virtual Machine Backup (VMB) add-on, which integrates TSM and VMware Consolidated Backup in a single appliance with a graphical interface, eliminating per-VM agents and automating scheduling and reporting. The result: a second appliance was added for virtual environments and backup effort dropped from several hours per week to under ten minutes a day (under an hour per week) while providing consolidated backup, archive and disaster recovery.
