OhioHealth - Customer Case Study

OhioHealth, a large Ohio-based healthcare system serving hundreds of thousands of patients and 21,000 staff, virtualized its environment to improve efficiency but ran into major backup challenges. The existing VMware backup solution produced poor reporting, made reruns and error diagnosis difficult, handled deduplication and compressed data inefficiently, and left OhioHealth with a 24-hour backup window and only about a 75% success rate.

By deploying STORServer’s Virtual Machine Backup (VMB) — which integrates with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and uses VMware vStorage APIs to move data without agents — OhioHealth simplified management, sped backups and improved restores. Results included shrinking TSM capacity for VMware images from 90 TB to 36 TB, cutting subsequent image backup times from ~30 minutes to seconds, and reducing the nightly backup window to 4–6 hours with a 99% success rate while backing up 900 of 1,200 VMs (about 13 TB) each night.
