Large Regional Transit Agency - Customer Case Study

A large regional mass transit agency serving over a million weekday riders needed to modernize its aging backup environment after its IBM System z9 mainframe could not support the newest IBM Spectrum Protect features. The agency wanted to shrink its server footprint, move from tape-first to disk-based backups to speed recovery, simplify administration, and enable future options such as cloud while replacing legacy hardware.

STORServer deployed matched solutions at a primary and offsite disaster-recovery location—two EBA2802 backup appliances with deduplicated disk storage and two IBM TS3200 LTO7 tape libraries—providing automated replication, on-disk primary and DR copies plus tape for third/fourth copies and archival. The change cut backup and recovery times by nearly 60% (backupsets from 5–7 days to 8–10 hours; full Oracle backups from 11–12 hours to under 6), enabled instant DR restores, reduced the datacenter footprint to a single 14U cabinet, and reduced offsite tape inventory by 98%.
