Furman University, a private institution with about 2,600 undergraduates and 230 faculty, needed to replace an aging grandfather-father-son tape backup system to better protect student records, faculty research and financial data. In 2006 the university sought a disk-to-disk-to-tape solution that would cut costs, shorten the backup window and simplify daily administration.

Furman deployed a STORServer Enterprise Backup Appliance (built on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) that supports Windows, Linux, UNIX and macOS and integrates backup, archive and disaster recovery. The EBA eliminated tracking more than 90 tapes, cut daily backup administration from over an hour to about 10 minutes, handles 300+ GB nightly and 3+ TB archived, enables offsite disaster recovery and successful restores, and saved roughly $25,000 in labor over three years.
