Bellin Health, Wisconsin’s leading healthcare provider with about 3,000 employees and over 100 TB of critical data, faced a compliance and performance problem: legacy LTO-3 backups tied to an old electronic medical record system could no longer meet required backup windows or regulatory requirements. Network analyst Dave Baus said they needed a scalable backup system because “technology was passing us by in a hurry.”

Bellin deployed a STORServer Backup Appliance built to their specifications, using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) for policy-based retention, automatic file expiration, granular search/restore and encryption. Built-in deduplication and incremental backups reduced deduplication time, and optional Virtual Machine Backup (VMB) centralized VMware ESX protection to enable much faster full restores. The appliance was installed in two days and had the entire environment backed up within a month; Baus praises STORServer’s responsive support and says he “couldn’t be a happier customer.”
