Ten Years of Weather Routing with StormGeo

Odfjell, a global chemical tanker operator with about 4,000 port calls a year, needed safer, more predictable route planning to protect crew, hazardous cargo and schedules while cutting fuel use and emissions. To give Captains better decision support for strategic route planning, Odfjell partnered with StormGeo and deployed StormGeo’s weather forecast and weather routing service, initially as a 2009 trial that expanded fleetwide.

StormGeo delivered real‑time forecasts, oceanographer and meteorologist support, and proactive alerts to recommend calmer, safer routes—one recommended reroute saved an estimated 114 hours on a single voyage. Over ten years StormGeo’s service helped reduce average wave height from 3.7 m to 1.2 m, is credited with roughly 46,605 MT CO2 avoided and about 18,000,000 USD in fuel savings, and in 2019 StormGeo’s recommendations were followed 145 times across 66 ships—improving safety, efficiency and response times.
