Pacific Basin and StormGeo Partner to Develop Strategic Power Routing and Advance Decarbonization

Pacific Basin, a leading owner and operator of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk ships, faced the industry-wide challenge of decarbonization—specifically optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020 Pacific Basin partnered with StormGeo to develop and trial a solution to address these goals.

StormGeo implemented its Strategic Power Routing (part of its Route Advisory Services and s‑Suite), which keeps a vessel’s engine at an optimal RPM to maintain constant power and stabilize fuel consumption across varying weather instead of running at a fixed speed. After a six‑month trial on four vessels, Pacific Basin reported approximately 3% reductions in fuel use and GHG emissions; StormGeo has submitted the case study to the UN Global Compact shipping guidance and now offers SPR to s‑Suite customers or as a standalone service.
