Fleet-wide weather routing software offers environmental and safety benefits

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean, pursuing sustainability and safer operations as part of its digitalisation journey, faced the challenge of reducing fleet emissions while improving voyage predictability and onboard safety. To meet this, the company rolled out a single, fleet‑wide weather routing software solution developed in partnership with StormGeo to standardise routing, forecasting and decision support across all vessels.

StormGeo’s advanced weather‑and‑ocean‑currents routing system predicts speed loss from wind, waves and currents, continuously exchanges forecasts and route updates between ships and a meteorological operations centre, and delivers route recommendations and alerts via a web map application. The deployment has improved arrival-time predictability, reduced fuel consumption and emissions through route optimisation, lowered cargo-damage risk and enhanced crew safety, while providing greater shore‑based transparency and consistent, group‑wide practices.
