Case Study: PHI achieves first U.S. aviation weather observer training launch and improved FAA pass rates with StormGeo

A StormGeo Case Study

Preview of the PHI Case Study

First Aviation Weather Observer Training Course Launched in US

PHI, a global helicopter operator, faced a training gap after the National Weather Service stopped providing weather observer training and the FAA took over certification but not instruction. With only online prep available and a high failure rate on the FAA meteorological observer exam, PHI needed classroom-based NF-OBS (non-federal observer) training to ensure legally required certified observers to supplement AWOS. PHI engaged StormGeo to develop and run the course.

StormGeo built and delivered the first U.S. classroom NF-OBS course at PHI’s Boothville, Louisiana heliport—led by its Aberdeen team and Aviation Services Manager Maria Pedrosa—providing manuals, exercise books, crib cards, mock exams and practical instruction. The StormGeo course produced measurable impact: five of six participants achieved the required 80% pass rate, reducing failure risk and enabling PHI to meet regulatory requirements; StormGeo is now expanding the training across the U.S.
