A StormGeo Case Study
TenneT, one of Europe’s leading transmission system operators responsible for the high-voltage grid serving some 41 million people, faced the challenge of continuously balancing variable offshore wind feed‑in to avoid outages — especially during storms when sudden gusts can trigger automatic wind‑farm shut‑downs. To address the need for accurate, location‑specific weather insight, TenneT partnered with StormGeo to receive advanced weather risk assessments through StormGeo’s monitoring portal.
StormGeo implemented an online monitoring portal that provides traffic‑light visualizations and forecasting graphs for wind gusts, speed, direction, and farm‑specific cut‑off thresholds, plus estimated wind power production. As a result, TenneT can predict wind‑farm shut‑downs and quantify their impact (including gigawatt‑scale losses), procure alternative generation in time and at reasonable cost, maintain grid equilibrium, and significantly reduce annual costs to consumers — outcomes TenneT attributes to its cooperation with StormGeo.
