Alfred Wegener Institute Chooses StormGeo to Provide Aviation Weather Services in Antarctica

The Alfred Wegener Institute and Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) required critical aviation weather forecasting to support its flight and ground operations in the extreme and challenging conditions of Antarctica's Queen Maud Land. With little instrumentation on site, pilots relied heavily on visual input, making the accurate prediction of scarce weather windows a significant logistical challenge. To meet this need, AWI partnered with vendor StormGeo for its specialized weather services.

StormGeo implemented a dedicated forecasting solution, providing support from meteorologists based in Bergen and Aberdeen. The solution included detailed forecasts delivered via a web portal, email, and online briefings for pilots and ground personnel. This high-quality weather intelligence enabled AWI to plan its operations with greater assurance, optimizing productivity during the brief Antarctic summer season. The partnership with StormGeo is set for four years, ensuring continued critical support for AWI's important research activities.
