Case Study: German Army achieves high availability and portable virtualized infrastructure with StorMagic SvSAN

StorMagic SvSAN delivers high availability and virtualized infrastructure for the German Army

The German Army needed a military-grade, highly available IT infrastructure that could be virtualized, portable, lightweight, run on limited field power, and be simple enough for soldiers with limited storage experience to deploy and manage. After evaluating options, the Army chose StorMagic’s SvSAN to meet these requirements, specifically for its ability to eliminate single points of failure while supporting a fully virtualized field infrastructure.

StorMagic deployed SvSAN as a software-only shared storage layer running on VMware ESXi, enabling two-server, no-SAN clusters with synchronous VM mirroring, centralized “single-pane” management, and field deployment in about 15 minutes. The solution supports up to 1,000 users per cluster, delivers true high availability in remote and harsh environments (preventing week-long outages that occurred with hardware replacements), simplifies management from HQ, reduces weight and cost by converging compute and storage, and meets the Army’s portability and resilience goals.
