Leading U.S. big box retail chain resolves downtime challenges with StorMagic SvSAN

Leading US Retail Chain, a top U.S. big-box retailer with about 2,000 stores, was suffering frequent local SAN failures (around 100 outages per year with roughly 6 hours downtime per outage), RAID-related restores, high CAPEX/OPEX and heavy reliance on external IT despite having no on-site staff. To solve these availability and cost challenges the chain selected StorMagic and its SvSAN software-defined shared storage to simplify infrastructure and maintain business continuity.

StorMagic deployed SvSAN across all stores, implementing a two-server, no-SAN architecture with synchronous VM mirroring, centralized single-pane management and automated 40-minute per-site deployment. The solution removed single points of failure, reduced hardware and external support needs, restored high availability across 2,000 sites and delivered measurable cost savings — including a 33% reduction in hardware costs by centralizing the quorum server.
