European supermarket chain achieves highly available distributed IT infrastructure with StorMagic SvSAN

Large European Supermarket Chain, with 150 stores and 10 distribution centers across Europe, needed to virtualize storage after virtualizing its POS systems to cut costs, boost efficiency and remove the single point of failure posed by its existing SAN. The retailer required a simple, centrally managed, highly available and high-performance solution that could be deployed across many small sites with no local IT staff and limited rack space.

StorMagic deployed SvSAN integrated with VMware vCenter, providing synchronous mirroring, centralized management and automated, non-disruptive updates that could be handled without storage specialists. StorMagic’s SvSAN reduced each site from three servers to two, eliminated the SPOF, outperformed traditional hardware, and delivered measurable impact — an estimated €1 million in savings over four years and a six-fold improvement in application efficiency for the SvSAN/SSD deployment — while lowering power, space and operational overhead.
