A StorMagic Case Study
Boston University Medical Campus faced aging server infrastructure that required time-consuming, one-at-a-time updates causing downtime and would have needed ten physical servers to support future growth. Seeking a budget-friendly, resilient virtualization solution, BU — advised by Cisco — selected StorMagic SvSAN deployed on Cisco C220-M4 servers to modernize its campus infrastructure.
StorMagic implemented a two-server stretched SvSAN cluster with a remote witness in the main datacenter, integrated with VMware vCenter for simplified management; VMs automatically fail over between buildings so critical services (DNS, DHCP, authentication, monitoring) remain online. The deployment reduced hardware needs from 10 servers to 2 and delivered licensing costs about 30% lower than VMware vSAN, enabled live maintenance during business hours, improved redundancy, and provided responsive StorMagic support.
