Kabosu Echelon Software Tackles Complex Field with Flying Colors

Kabosu faced the challenge of simulating a highly complex compositional reservoir model with 250 wells, 1.4 million active cells, dual-porosity/dual-permeability geology, and 130 years of forecast under limited hardware and time. The goal was to run iterative sensitivity studies and full ensemble workflows within a single workday while accurately capturing gas reinjection, miscible behavior, and bubble-point effects. Stone Ridge Technology provided the ECHELON reservoir simulation software to address this need.

Stone Ridge Technology’s ECHELON 2.0 compositional simulator, running on NVIDIA V100 GPUs, was used to model the Kabosu field with fully implicit and adaptive implicit formulations and native field-management switching. The model completed in around 2 hours on a 4-GPU compute node, making multiple engineering iterations feasible in a workday, while maintaining stable Newton and linear iteration counts and strong scaling performance of 1.7x from 1 to 2 GPUs and 1.4x from 2 to 4 GPUs.
