iReservoir runs 100 simulations in 5.0 hours with Stone Ridge Technology

iReservoir, a reservoir engineering consultancy, faced a significant challenge in characterizing an unconventional reservoir in the Permian Basin. The engineers needed to run numerical simulations on a large ensemble of complex model realizations, each with millions of cells, but were severely restricted by the slow speed and substantial hardware requirements of existing legacy simulator software.

Stone Ridge Technology implemented its ECHELON reservoir simulation software, a massively parallel solution built for exceptional speed on GPU hardware. This allowed iReservoir to run hundreds of realizations in vastly less time. The results were substantial: a 16 million cell model was run, with 100 realizations for two different reservoir descriptions completing in approximately 5 to 5.7 hours on a single node, representing a speedup of 28 to 48 times faster than a standard simulator.
