How ECHELON enables the modeling and simulation of giant conventional reservoirs

Stone Ridge Technology worked with a giant conventional reservoirs service provider that needed to stress-test reservoir simulation at extreme scale. The challenge was to model and analyze a very large, complex oil reservoir using a billion-cell, three-phase model with 1,056 wells, far beyond the size of typical industry simulations.

Using Stone Ridge Technology’s ECHELON simulator on IBM POWER8 systems with NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs, the team ran the 1.01 billion-cell model in 92 minutes on 30 nodes. The result showed major performance gains over prior billion-cell runs that used more than 500 nodes and took 20 hours, demonstrating that Stone Ridge Technology could deliver far faster simulation with far fewer hardware resources.
