Case Study: Permian Basin Unconventional Reservoir Service Provider achieves faster 16-million-cell reservoir simulation with Stone Ridge Technology's ECHELON

A Stone Ridge Technology Case Study

Preview of the Permian Basin Unconventional Reservoir Service Provider Case Study

ECHELON's accuracy and speed play a critical role in the characterization of the Permian Basin unconventional reservoir

Stone Ridge Technology worked with a Permian Basin unconventional reservoir service provider, iReservoir, to improve simulation of a large and complex oil reservoir in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico. The team needed to run sensitivity analysis across many model parameters, but existing simulators were too slow and resource-intensive for the millions- to tens-of-millions-cell models involved.

Stone Ridge Technology’s ECHELON reservoir simulator was used to run hundreds of large, full-physics realizations on GPU hardware. On a single Cray CS-Storm node with 8 NVIDIA Tesla K80 GPUs, 100 realizations of a 16 million-cell model were completed in about 5 to 5.7 hours, with average job times of 12 to 28 minutes and speedups of 13.8x to 48x over an industry-standard simulator, enabling far faster and broader reservoir analysis.
