Echelon Solves Benchmark Spe10 Model in Record 18 Seconds

The customer, SPE10, a benchmark test case from the Society of Petroleum Engineers, required a solution to run a very large and complex 1.1 million cell reservoir model in a reasonable timeframe. The challenge was to simulate 2,000 days of production on a model with extreme permeability variations, a task that took a legacy CPU-based simulator 72 hours to complete.

The vendor, Stone Ridge Technology, solved the benchmark using its ECHELON reservoir simulator. By employing a GPU-accelerated Algebraic Multigrid solver on just two NVIDIA V100s, Stone Ridge Technology completed the full simulation in a record 18 seconds, achieving a 100x speedup. This extreme performance demonstrates how modern algorithms and GPU hardware can rapidly solve complex problems, enabling faster and more comprehensive reservoir analysis.
