Vendor Stone Ridge Technology addressed this with its ECHELON reservoir simulation software, a product built to leverage modern GPU computing for massive parallel processing.

Stone Ridge Technology's ECHELON solution used 30 IBM POWER8 nodes with NVIDIA GPUs to complete the billion-cell simulation in just 92 minutes. This result was achieved using an order of magnitude fewer server nodes and two orders of magnitude fewer domains than comparable CPU-based solutions, demonstrating a dramatic increase in calculation speed and a far more efficient use of hardware resources.
