Case Study: StubHub Center achieves cost savings and energy flexibility with Stem

A Stem Case Study

Preview of the StubHub Center Case Study

StubHub Center deploys largest energy storage system at any stadium in the country, gaining cost savings and energy flexibility

StubHub Center in Carson, California, a 30,000‑seat stadium operated by AEG and home to the LA Galaxy (and temporarily the NFL’s LA Chargers), faced high time‑of‑use energy costs and limited ability to shift operations to avoid peak pricing. To address demand charge reduction, demand response, and protection against utility rate changes, StubHub Center partnered with Stem to deploy AI‑powered energy storage — a 1 MW / 2 MWh Stem PowerStore activated in January 2017.

Stem installed and now operates the 1 MW / 2 MWh AI‑driven storage system that automatically charges when electricity is cheap and discharges during costly periods, cutting time‑based energy costs and minimizing exposure to rate changes without impacting stadium operations. The Stem system — the largest energy storage deployment at any U.S. stadium — is also networked into Stem’s virtual power plant, enabling demand response and grid support, greater renewable integration, and measurable cost savings for the venue.
