A Stem Case Study
Stockmans, an electrical contractor in San Luis Obispo, wanted to expand into energy storage to help customers withstand California blackouts and wildfires but lacked familiarity with the state's SGIP incentives and had been burned by smaller suppliers. Stockmans partnered with Stem, adopting Stem's backup power energy storage solution to qualify for Equity Resiliency funding and pursue its first major storage project.
Stem presented to the district board and engineered a 464 kW / 1,856 kWh system that backs up critical pumping loads for up to four hours before transferring to the diesel generator. When the Stem system came online in spring 2021, it improved reliability for the San Bernardino County water district, reduced utility costs by cutting demand charges and shifting load to off-peak periods, and lowered greenhouse gas emissions—delivering measurable resilience and cost savings for Stockmans’ customer.
