A Stem Case Study
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), including the InterContinental San Francisco, faced rising electricity costs as HVAC, elevators and laundry systems created large simultaneous energy spikes that drove demand charges of 30–40% of monthly bills. After traditional efficiency measures and manual load shifting fell short, IHG turned to Stem’s Learning Software and Energy Storage (PowerScope and a 54 kW storage system) to reduce peaks without compromising guest comfort.
Stem deployed its 54 kW energy storage and PowerScope analytics to automatically shave expensive spikes and give IHG’s engineering team real-time insights to stagger equipment start-ups. Savings began on Day 1: operational changes enabled by Stem reduced peak demand by about 75 kW and, combined with the system’s automated response, are projected to deliver $84,000 in lifetime energy bill savings.
