Case Study: Alsco achieves more than $10,000 in first-year electricity savings with Stem's energy storage and analytics

A Stem Case Study

Preview of the Alsco Case Study

Stem reduces Alsco’s electricity spend by more than $10,000 in first year

Alsco, the company that introduced linen and uniform rental services and now operates a San Jose industrial laundry branch, was exposed to some of the highest electricity rates in the U.S. and heavy demand charges (often exceeding 60% of the bill) caused by simultaneous starts of washers, dryers and other equipment. Alsco engaged Stem and its on-site energy storage offering (Stem’s PowerStore with PowerScope software) to reduce peak demand automatically without changing operations.

In March 2014 Stem installed a 54 kW PowerStore that uses real-time data and predictive analytics to shave demand spikes; the system began delivering savings in the first month, cutting peak demand by about 5.5% and producing more than $10,000 in annual utility bill savings. Installed at zero upfront cost, Stem’s solution provided immediate payback, a 2:1 savings-to-cost ratio, and projects roughly $104,000 in savings over 10 years as the system self-tunes and demand rates rise.
