Stem Helps Blue Horizon Bring Energy Storage to Minnesota

Blue Horizon Energy, a clean energy development company serving businesses and communities, needed an energy storage partner that could meet its high standards and support a turnkey project for a manufacturer near Minneapolis. The customer wanted to improve resilience and sustainability while reducing energy bills, offsetting tax liabilities, and coordinating with a local electric cooperative. Stem, working through distributor partner Werner Electric, provided an energy storage solution built around its Athena smart energy software and a solar plus storage system.

Stem helped Blue Horizon develop one of Minnesota’s first large behind-the-meter solar plus storage systems outside an investor-owned utility footprint, sized at 250 kW / 500 kWh with 400 kW of solar PV. The solution is expected to lower utility bills, preserve the value of solar, and provide up to two hours of clean backup power for the full facility, or longer for critical loads. Stem’s procurement and co-op experience also helped keep the project on schedule, and the partners are now exploring additional projects across the Upper Midwest.
