A Stem Case Study
Fortune 500 Manufacturer, a Scarborough, Ontario building materials plant, engaged Stem to address soaring energy costs driven by Ontario’s Global Adjustment (GA). The facility’s load regularly exceeded 10 MW, and staff were manually curtailing thermally driven equipment in response to unreliable peak predictions—an effort-intensive approach that still left the company exposed to GA charges based on the province’s five highest annual peak hours.
Stem installed a 5.3 MW / 8.5 MWh battery energy storage system and deployed its Athena® energy optimization platform to forecast peaks and autonomously optimize dispatch, while coordinating with the customer on likely peak hours. The Stem solution reduced the facility’s electricity demand to just under 1 MW (about a 90% reduction from typical load) and delivered approximately $1.6M CAD in savings.
