Preview of the Kearsarge Energy Case Study

Partnering to Provide New Solar+Storage Services

Kearsarge Energy L.P., a developer and long‑term owner/operator of renewable projects, wanted to augment solar generation on distressed municipal sites with battery energy storage to reduce wholesale demand charges, boost grid resilience, and maximize savings. Kearsarge partnered with Stem to operate a 2 MW / 9 MWh front‑of‑meter storage system paired with 3.6 MW of solar PV on a former landfill in Haverhill, MA, and sought Stem’s market bidding, dispatch scheduling, data management, and reporting expertise.

Stem implemented operations and its Athena software to monetize the project in ISO New England wholesale markets and support MA programs (SMART and the Clean Peak Standard), while ensuring incentive compliance (ITC and SMART). The Stem–Kearsarge Haverhill project has joined a growing portfolio and is expected to deliver energy savings, lease and maintenance savings, and tax payments totaling at least $3.9 million to the city over the project’s lifetime.
