Case Study: Ocean Park Inn achieves 10% demand-charge reduction with Stem

A Stem Case Study

Preview of the Ocean Park Inn Case Study

Ocean Park Inn reduces demand charges by 10 percent while guests continue to enjoy the comfort they expect on vacation

Ocean Park Inn, a 72-room beachfront hotel in San Diego, faced steep energy costs and large demand charges driven by overlapping, energy-intensive hotel operations. Wanting a low‑touch solution that wouldn’t affect guest comfort or add staff burden, the hotel selected Stem’s energy management system (activated June 2014) combining on-site storage with the PowerScope software.

Stem installed an 18 kW battery system and PowerScope platform that learns usage patterns, charges when prices are low and deploys stored power to shave peaks; financing and SDG&E incentives enabled no upfront cost. The Stem system automates savings, cuts annual demand charges by more than 10%, saves about $4,500 per year (roughly $45,000 over 10 years), and gives staff real-time visibility to further optimize operations.
